If you are sitting there experiencing dread at the end of the video, relax, nothing has changed for you. The meaning of life is the same before the video as it was after the video. Which is to say, experience is the meaning of life, and this video changes nothing in that regard. So relax and continue your experience, as you were before the video.

Who else knows about stainless steel balls? Drop them on a concrete or tile floor and they bounce quite well. The more velocity at which it impacts, the higher the bounce; as expected with a rubber ball. However, take that steel ball, locate a stainless steel table top and repeat the drop test. Throw it down on the table as hard as you desire. One of our first lessons in 6th grade science was on the neutralization/cancellation of forces, but I may be wrong about the lesson title. I have won several bets over the years with that knowledge. lol

We consider something "is" as long as we can classify it and/or has a use for us. But are holes things? Is darkness something? We have names for the absence of things. Does that make the absence another thing?

This strangely connects to me mucking up a wall while building my house and not being mad about it while my father looks on distraught. It's not that I destroyed a wall that never got to be there thus far, I've created something meaningless to humans. And this realization just gave it meaning.

It's a chair, there. Why? Because I said so. Because millions of others say so. And we all agree, we have communicated with each and we all agree. I do not believe this is a matter of...matter. I believe this is a simple matter of communication. It doesn't really matter what we call it, as long as we all agree on what we call it. So the question I have is, what do we do about the extreme minority of people who do not agree?

Nice vid :D As someone who studies these topics, I'm going to suggest four ways to build and expand on it: 1. Things (hehe) get pretty disturbing when you realize that the solution "simples/elementary particles REALLY exist, the rest does not" may not be a viable one. The simplest read about this would be the first two lectures in Putnam 1987, The many faces of realism. 2. I think it's important to go beyond the abstract style of the earliest analytic philosophy and also engage with more recent developments that span across philosophy of science and also tie these issues with actual scientific practice. Boyd's "homeostatic property clusters" are fundamental, for example, and there's many excellent papers and books on the biological species problem (we have more than 26 non-compatible yet scientifically useful and currently accepted ways to classify species). John Dupré's The Disorder of Things is also an important read about this issue. Hasok Chang 2012, Is water H2O? is an astounding work which I'm sure any VSauce fan would find mindblowing - I also suggest his paper "The rising of chemical natural kinds through epistemic iteration" which can be found in "Natural Kinds and Classification in Scientific Practice", and his other book, Inventing Temperature. Also basically all of Nancy Cartwright (the philosopher and mathematician, not Lisa Simpson's voice actress) writings about physics. 3. All of this also has interesing socio-political consequences (think about how the bad framing of "what is really a woman/man" affects trans rights, for example). 4. I think it's pretty important to connect this issue with the second Wittgenstein and the "Kripkenstein paradox" (which is explored in a quite simple way in Kripke 1982, Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language).
